Dr Mariana Pinto da Costa is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London, and a Consultant Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. She is an Invited Professor at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar, University Porto, and the Culture, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre.
During her medical studies in the University of Porto, she studied two years abroad (in Italy and Poland) and received the 2009 European Commission ‘Erasmus 2 million – Erasmus success history’ award. She contributed to writing the Erasmus+ Generation Declaration, and presented it at the European Parliament. She led the Brain Drain study, researching mobility experiences of psychiatric trainees across 33 European countries, and gained clinical and research experience in Africa, screening alcohol, smoking and other substances use in primary and mental health care in Luanda, while studying for the International MSc on Mental Health Policy and Services at the NOVA University of Lisbon, supported by the WHO.
At the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) she Chairs the Education in Psychiatry Section, founder, and chaired the Early Career Psychiatrists Section, and established the World Psychiatry Exchange Program. She was awarded Honorary Membership of the WPA and was nominated by Columbia University as one of the Top 100 Innovative Women Leaders in Global Mental Health.
She Chairs the Section of Public Mental Health, is a member of the Committee on Ethics at the European Psychiatric Association. She is the Academic Lead of the Digital Psychiatry Special Interest Group at the Royal College of Psychiatrists and serves on the Editorial board of the British Journal of Psychiatry and BJPsych Advances.
She has published over 200 articles (h-index: 27), and supervises PhD and MSc students at King’s College London and at the University of Porto.
