Graduating from Complutense University of Madrid (BSs, MSc) as a political scientist, Maria has been completing a part-time PhD at the CGMH.  Her research investigates the design of exit strategies for global mental health programme implementation in low-resource settings, especially in interventions funded by Official Development Assistance (ODA) and private philanthropy.

Maria joined King’s College London in 2017 working with Prof Sir Graham Thornicroft at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience.  She has since coordinated several global research initiatives – the MASC study (Adverse sequelae of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health care in seven LMICs); the INDIGO Network (an international collaboration of research experts committed to the reduction of stigma and discrimination related to mental ill health); The Lancet Commission on Ending Stigma and Discrimination in Mental Health; the Commission Partnership Implementation (CIP) Group. Maria is one of co-authors of the recent WHO Mosaic Toolkit.

She is currently working with the King’s Improvement Science (KIS) team and King’s Health Partners (KHP) as a health services researcher, on programmes related to recovery housing, sexual and reproductive health, evaluating clinical effectiveness, quality improvement collaborations, and evaluation advice clinics, all within the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
