Tessa Roberts

Lecturer (Affiliate)

Tessa is a mixed methods researcher and lecturer in psychiatry and mental health, with a particular interest in the social determinants of mental health, neighbourhood effects, and community-level interventions. She has collaborated with colleagues in India, Nigeria, Trinidad, Ethiopia and South Africa as part of her work, and has worked on implementation science programmes, epidemiological programmes, and participatory action research projects.

Tessa currently leads the Atmiyata East London project, a 4-year research project funded by Barts Charity that is adapting an evidence-based intervention for common mental disorders from India for the context of Newham in East London, in partnership with the Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy and Newham Community Project. She is also a Co-Investigator on the SCOPE programme on psychosis in Ethiopia and the INTREPID III programme on psychosis in India, Nigeria and Trinidad.

Tessa teaches on the Master’s programme in Cultural Psychology and Psychiatry at Queen Mary University of London, where she leads the “Cultural Psychology and Psychiatry: Theory and Methods” module, and has contributed to the Master’s programme in Global Mental Health at KCL/LSHTM for over ten years, including leading the “Society and Mental Health” module.
