Dr Alessandro Massazza
Alessandro is an Honorary Research Fellow at Centre for Global Mental Health at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He was a Research Fellow until March 2022 on the CHANGE project where he contributes to the development and implementation of PM+A, a transdiagnostic psychological intervention aimed at addressing alcohol misuse and mental health comorbidities among conflict-affected populations in Ukraine and Uganda. He is currently the Research Manager, Evidence on the Mental Health Team at Wellcome Trust.
He received a BSc in Anthropology, an MSc in Research Methods in Psychology, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology at University College London. His PhD research focused on affective and cognitive predictors of intrusive memories among earthquake survivors.
Alessandro also worked for one year and a half as a consultant for the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at the World Health Organization. He provided support on several projects concerned with mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) in emergencies. In particular, he was involved in the development of a Minimum Services Package for MHPSS in humanitarian settings in collaboration with UNICEF and UNHCR.
His main area of expertise relates to mental health in the context of populations affected by adversity. He has experience working in various complex settings in Palestine, Brazil, Japan (Fukushima region), and Italy (rural areas affected by 2016-2017 earthquake sequence).
