Dr Muhammad Alkasaby
Muhammad is the Mental Health research fellow for the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team (UK-PHRST). He is a clinician trained in psychiatry.
Prior to joining LSHTM, Muhammad worked with the Egyptian Ministry of Health in different mental health-related projects, including the implementation and evaluation of the Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP). He is also one of the team members developing the national mental health platform, an online platform that provides telemental health services in Egypt.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Muhammad worked with the national Mental Health and Psycho-Social Support (MHPSS) Technical working group in Egypt to develop the national Mental health response plan to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also participated in different research and capacity-building projects to improve mental health services during the pandemic.
Muhammad is currently working on the “Strengthening Public mental health in Africa in response to the COVID-19 Epidemic” (SPACE) project for the UK-PHRST, in collaboration with PHE, CGMH, WHO AFRO, Africa CDC, and the West African Health Organisation (WAHO). The project combines research, capacity building, and engagement activities in order to better understand and support the mental health response to the current COVID-19 pandemic and other public health emergencies in Africa.
