Global Mental Health talk on mental health beliefs in Nigeria

This Global Mental Health talk has been organized by the Journal Club of the LSHTM Centre for Global Mental Health, Wed, April 18, 5:15pm, in Jerry Morris B at Tavistock Place

Dung Jidong will be visiting from the University of East London to talk about his qualitative research on the conceptualisation of mental health among the Berom, Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo communities in Nigeria. Based on semi-structured interviews with psychology-aligned practitioners and 'laypersons,' the study examines participants' beliefs about mental health and the clash between laypersons' beliefs and those of Western-trained practitioners.

Dung Jidong is currently completing his PhD research on the Nigerian cultural beliefs and mental health, funded by the University of East London (UEL) Excellence PhD Studentship. Prior to his doctoral research, he obtained a Master’s degree in Clinical and Community Psychology at UEL and a BSc in General and Applied Psychology from the University of Jos, Nigeria. His PhD research has received international recognition in conference presentations at the Stanford University in California USA and McGill University at Montreal Quebec in Canada.
