Reconceptualising the treatment gap for common mental disorders: A fork in the road for global mental health?

We welcome registrations for this joint event between the ESRC Centre for Society & Mental Health and the Centre for Global Mental Health.

Drawing on qualitative research from India, Mexico, Uganda, and Colombia, the speakers will argue that the treatment gap for common mental disorders (CMD) arises largely from low demand for treatment for these experiences, rather than limited supply of mental health services. They will explore what listening to the reasons for low demand can teach us in terms of better meeting people’s needs, how the social context within which CMD occurs shapes people’s experiences and explanations of their distress, and offer a potential route forward for the field of global mental health.
