The role of visual story telling in transforming opinions and influencing policy: Documentary screening & photography exhibition
About the event
Visual storytelling is a powerful tool for communicating complex issues and increasing public engagement with science. The Centre for Global Mental Health is hosting an event to draw the focus on the use of visual storytelling in tackling a range of mental health topics from human rights abuses to mental wellbeing.
- The event will commence with a documentary screening of “Breaking the Chains”, by Dr. Erminia Colucci (Senior lecturer Middlesex University London & Honorary Senior Research Fellow, The University of Melbourne). This is an award-winning ethnographic documentary that focuses on understanding the context and meanings of human rights abuses against people who are severely mentally ill in Indonesia and measures that can be taken to eradicate such abuses.
- The second half of the event will involve a panel discussion on the role of visual storytelling in research and in creating policy change.
- The event will be followed by a drinks reception and photography exhibition. The exhibition is based on a previous photography competition launched by the Centre for Global Mental Health on World Mental Health Day 2017, themed, ‘what does wellbeing mean to you?’. All photo entries will be exhibited and there will be opportunities to speak to some of the contestants.
The event is open to all
